So with the title sewn up on Saturday and Jeonbuk now officially champions attention turns to the relegation battle and of course this weekend’s final Supermatch. First up …..
Suwon v FC Seoul
Sunday sees the final Supermatch of the season, the previous three encounters have resulted in 2 wins for Seoul and 1 for Suwon. After Jeonbuk’s 3-0 victory over Jeju today the only thing left for Suwon to play for is the ACL spots for next season. They are 5 pts clear of Pohang going into Sunday’s games and after Saturday’s fixtures remain 10 ahead of Jeju. They have been pretty much unbeatable at home this season, tho they did lose to Seoul at home. They will be hoping that Seoul will be focusing on the FA Cup Final instead of this one. Seoul lost at home to Jeonbuk last weekend and will now probably view the FA Cup as their best bet for an ACL slot and probably save Choi from getting the boot to be honest. This is the Supermatch though and it doesn’t normally need any encouragement for both sides to give their all. Seoul will want to avenge losing the last one at home in October, and Suwon won’t want to hand them bragging rights for the close season.
Prediction Suwon 1 Seoul 1
Gyeongnam v Jeonnam (2pm)
With Sangju and Seongnam drawing in the 2pm Saturday kick-off Gyeongnam have the chance to hoist themselves above Seongnam in the race against the playoff spot. With Gyeongnam’s horrendous goal difference they can’t afford to tie on points with Seongnam so a victory today would see them open up a 2pt gap. Both teams face each other at Tancheon next Sunday so any gap would give the leaders a huge mental boost. Jeonnam have nothing left to play for this season other than pride, they were lucky to get a point last week at home to Seongnam so maybe they have already started looking at the travel brochures. They also haven’t won since it was warm enough for short sleeves and to be honest I’m not sure this will end any time soon.
Prediction Gyeongnam 1 Jeonnam 0
The final game of the weekend is
Pohang v Ulsan (4pm)
This one will probably have a typical end of season look about it but unfortunately not like last season when they took the title to the final day. Pohang will be looking to make sure they don’t let their third place slip and home advantage should give them enough for this one. Another K-League Classic team on a poor run, Pohang have only 1 win in 8. They looked strong for most of the season but the last couple of months they have looked like a team devoid of both ideas and confidence. Ulsan have been inconsistent this year and even although they have snatched 2 victories in their last 3 though were soundly destroyed by Suwon at home last weekend. They definitely have the look and feel of a team that plays off their confidence and when that deserts them they look distinctly average.
Prediction Pohang 1 Ulsan 0
