K-League Classic Round 7 Previews

K-League ClassicK-League Classic Round 7 PreviewsK-League Classic

Round 6 was a bit of a wet affair with the Saturday being a particularly miserable day for football across the country. It was a weekend that witnessed those plucky newcomers of Suwon FC fall to their first defeat, restored Jeonbuk to second and continued Jeonnam’s horrendous and winless start to the season. Round 7 has only two Saturday matches for us as the K-league seems to have opted for a Super Sunday feel this weekend.

Jeju United vs. Seongnam FC (Sat @ 2pm)

Jeju have finally started to look like a steady team this season and will be looking to continue their two match winning run at home this weekend to third placed Seongnam. Much has been made of their poor away form but they did dig deep and come back from Ulsan with all three points last weekend, even after star signing Lee Keun Ho missed a shocking penalty. They’re always very strong at home and have looked particularly deadly from set-pieces this year. Seongnam have struggled a little recently drawing and losing to both of the Jeolla teams in the last two rounds, they also come into this one without Yun Young Sun who will begin his military service and given Jeju’s deadball prowess this could be a huge loss. They will need to bounce back soon if they want to remain in the top spots. This one is always close and did involve a seven goal thriller last year.
Prediction: Score Draw – Jeju 1 : Seongnam 1

Suwon City vs. Incheon United (Sat @ 4pm)

Suwon FC lost for the first time in the K-League Classic last weekend after  setting the bar high for themselves in their inaugural season at the top table as they finally lost 3-0 away to FC Seoul. It was a match in which they had a lot of the ball but early season fears of their lack of firepower up front seem to be being realized. Incheon on the other hand seem to be improving a little at least in terms of not giving up when behind. Song Si Joong has now saved their skins with 90th minute goals in the last two matches and the general feeling is that if they can get their noses in front they might just record their first victory . Plagued with off-field issues including player’s contracts they could probably do with a break on the field.  This could either be an end to end match or a drab affair, either way though a draw looks the most likely outcome.
Prediction: Score Draw – Suwon : 1 Incheon 1

Ulsan Hyundai vs. FC Seoul (Sun @ 2pm)

Ulsan have been erratic again this season and after a good run of four games without defeat fell at home to Jeju in Round 6 in a match which on paper they would have been disappointed not to take something from.  They currently sit in fifth place in the table with eight points so far this season although results going in their favour this weekend could see them enter the ACL spots. They do have the task of having to face league leaders FC Seoul who are on a five match winning streak in the league and that opening day defeat to Jeonbuk becomes more a distant memory as every week goes past. They notched up another win in the ACL last week and have booked their place in the last 16 although it wasn’t done quite with the aplomb of previous rounds. They, like Seongnam, have also lost an important figure to the military in the shape of Shin Jin Ho which could hit them in the middle of the pitch.
Prediction: Howe Win – Ulsan : 2 Seoul  1

Gwangju vs. Suwon Bluewings (Sun @ 2pm)

Gwangju have been both a source of joy and frustration to their fans with their inconsistent form so  far in 2016, they have only managed two wins, and one draw and it does look like being a rather long season for them. They showed a lot of spirit coming from behind away to Jeonnam last weekend and fully deserved to leave with all three points, but it’s exactly those Jekyll and Hyde performances that are hurting them . Suwon Bluewings rather surprisingly find themselves on the same number of points after a hugely underwhelming start to the season. They led against Incheon in the last round only to be pegged back by that last minute goal and have now ran up three draws on the bounce. They did manage to dig deep and win their midweek ACL clash in Osaka and maybe that could be the jump start their season needs.
Prediction: Away Win – Gwangju : 1 The Bluewings  2

Sangju Sangmu vs. Jeonbuk Hyundai (Sun @ 2pm)

Sangju pulled off arguably the shock of the round last weekend when they defeated Pohang 2-0 at home in a match that few would have called.  They are sitting in ninth place in the table but you do have to take into account the poor starts that both Incheon and Jeonnam have made. They will be boosted after a new intake of players this week but then they will also lose a fair whack on their sqaud before the end of the season so its a case of swings and roundabouts.  They face Champions Jeonbuk who are now the only undefeated team in the Classic after they put Seongnam to the sword in a hugely entertaining 3-1 home victory last weekend. That match was the typical ‘game of two halves’ as Jeonbuk were coasting at half-time before being pinned back by Seongnam not once but twice in the second half. It took a moment of brilliance form Leonardo and Kim Bo Kyung to separate the teams and it is exactly that uncertainty in their team that is causing people to doubt their title credentials.
Prediction: Away Win – Sangju : 0 Jeonbuk  2

Pohang BadgeJeonnam Badge

Pohang Steelers vs. Jeonnam Dragons (Sun @ 3pm)

Pohang crashed out of the champions league during the week in the group stages after losing at home to Evergrande and to be honest their domestic form hasn’t really looked any better. They have only managed one win this season which came at the home of bottom side Incheon a few weeks ago. They do have a few potential matchwinners in their squad and they are definitely underachieving so you do feel they will bounce back out of this malaise real soon. Jeonnam still haven’t won all season and with three draws and three defeats are becoming a concern. They took the lead against Gwangju at home last round only to blow it and lose 2-1 missing a penalty along the way. They look like a team devoid of ideas and seriously lacking in confidence.

Prediction: Home Win – Pohang 1 : Jeonnam 0

      1. But jeju don’t like playing away . So far only 1 away win against Ulsan somemore last min goal. Jeju can be trusted?

      2. Now that Lee Keun Ho has scored a couple of goals I think he will start playing really well. Suwon are good in defence but not great at attack so I don’t think they’ll beat Jeju. It will be a close game but I think Jeju will just win.
